Something magical happened during our very first Ukulele Safari in Kenya.
Fourteen people from different countries met for the first time. We had all come through the difficult days of COVID. We were tired, grateful, excited, and a little unsure of what was waiting for us.
Then something beautiful happened.
There we were, sitting together in the African savannah. Elephants walked in the distance. Friends who had been strangers only days before picked up their ukuleles. One note became another, and another. Before we knew it, we had written a song.
That song became Marafiki Pamoja, which means Friends Together in Swahili.
It is more than a song. It is the sound of that moment, the sound of people finding each other through music.
Since then, every time we meet on a Ukulele Safari, we play it again. Every version is different. Every year brings a new friend, a new smile, a new note.
Just like life, the song keeps growing.
Because that’s what music does. It brings people together and turns strangers into friends.
